Celebrating A Common Thread

A sense of awe and excitement vibrated in the air as applause erupted and veteran Civil Rights activist and former New York Secretary of State, Basil A. Paterson, Esq., approached the podium and accepted the Abraham Krasnoff Courage and Commitment Award. As one ERASE Racism Board Member observed , “we could not have chosen a better honoree.” Basil was a gracious and delightful honoree as he recounted stories of the struggles, challenges and victories across his many years as a champion for racial justice and equality. The award, named after the late ERASE Racism Founder, business leader and philanthropist, Abe Krasnoff, was a fitting tribute to Mr. Paterson who has roots in the Long Island and New York City areas. It was presented by Eric Krasnoff, current Chairman, President and CEO of Pall Corporation who spoke highly of his father's altruism and recounted a recent story that points to the need for diligence and the courage and commitment his father demonstrated in the fight for racial equity.

In the beautiful surrounds of Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage State Park, ERASE Racism's Third Annual Spring Benefit, “A Common Thread: Celebrating People of the African Diaspora,” brought together the richness of culture and ethnic diversity that speaks to the best in all of us.

The evening featured lively jazz music by the Bill Easley Quintet, great food and cocktails, a marketplace of fine art, elegant hand-crafted Jewelry and accessories and

educational displays of African American art treasures. A silent auction boasted Limited Edition prints, custom graphic design and photography from prominent local artists, spa retreats, in-home musical performance, wine tasting, a week in Mexico and game tickets to a New York Islanders game among others. With the generous support of corporations, not-for-profit organizations and individuals, the event raised over $150,000.00 and was attended by nearly 300 guests.

What is A Common Thread?

A common thread of African heritage links many people and communities on Long Island to each other and to other communities and countries around the world. Regrettably, the brown and black people of African heritage also share a common thread of institutional and structural racism in vital areas of daily life, including public school education, housing, health care, and economic development.

A Common Thread: Celebrating People of the African Diaspora brings together leaders of all races who recognize the importance of addressing issues of racial equity across the New York Metropolitan Region and making real change to improve the quality of life for everyone.

Mark your calendars for next year's event! Come celebrate our 4 th Annual Spring Benefit which will be held on June 4th 2008 at the Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park.
