Lively conversations, laughter and a wonderful feeling of connectedness followed you from room to room at ERASE Racism’s Fourth Annual Benefit. For the nearly 300 guests who attended “A Common Thread: Celebrating People of the African Diaspora” on June 4, 2008 at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park, this was a night to remember.
Jazz and Calypso rhythms from the Bill Easley Quartet lightened the step as guests moved between the Benefit’s Silent Auction and Marketplace—a unique collection of vendors of fine art, handcrafted jewelry and elegant accessories including Bob Carter, Bernie of New York and Must Have Accessories in Oyster Bay. This event maintains its casual yet festive feel and guests return year after year to renew old acquaintances and make new friends.
The highlight of the evening was the brief program. Linetta Gilbert of the Ford Foundation was on hand to introduce this year’s recipient of the Abraham Krasnoff Courage and Commitment Award, honoree john powell. In his customary soft-spoken voice, john kept the attention of every person gathered in the Carlyle’s spacious conservatory as he highlighted the recurring and long-term impacts of a racialized society and the need for diligence in the fight against structural and institutional racism.
We are grateful for the generous support of the foundations, corporations, not-for-profit organizations and individuals who support ERASE Racism and the Annual Benefit.
The event is a huge undertaking that brings out the best in everyone. From everything observed and heard, the evening was a triumph! Guests felt immeasurable pride in being connected to this organization.

A common thread of African heritage links many people and communities on Long Island to each other and to other communities and countries around the world. Regrettably, the brown and black people of African heritage also share a common thread of institutional and structural racism in vital areas of daily life, including public school education, housing, health care, and economic development.
A Common Thread: Celebrating People of the African Diaspora brings together leaders of all races who recognize the importance of addressing issues of racial equity across the New York Metropolitan Region and making real change to improve the quality of life for everyone.
On June 4, 2008, you will help us honor john a. powell, Executive Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and an internationally recognized authority in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, and issues relating to race, ethnicity, poverty and the law.
You will also hear about ERASE Racism's successes at building greater racial equity across the region.
