Eliminating Barriers to Racial Equity

Our Accomplishments

Overview

Since its founding in 2001, ERASE Racism has documented racial inequities on Long Island in housing and public school education. We use statistical analysis, fair housing testing, survey research, and anecdotal evidence to reveal disparities in opportunity, and most recently, community organizing to increase community capacity and bolster advocacy efforts.

Our research is utilized by the media, public officials, university researchers, nonprofits and the public in general. We have used these findings to identify discriminatory public policies and practices and deficient civil rights laws. We have succeeded in getting appropriate changes enacted, including two notably strengthened fair housing laws and enforcement systems in Nassau and Suffolk counties. ERASE Racism has also placed greater emphasis on collaboration with allied organizations to effectuate change, working with various coalitions, the Progressive Network, and the Moral Monday Movement. We have built a diverse constituency that supports our work. More than 1,000 adults have joined ERASE Racism's Partnership for Racial Equity. Also, 875 individuals have participated in our Unraveling Racism Training, a two-day intensive workshop that explores institutional racism, and almost 500 high school students have participated in our leadership trainings and youth roundtables.
