Eliminating Barriers to Racial Equity

Interactive Map: A Decade of Change, School Segregation on Long Island

This interactive map shows all of the public school districts on Long Island categorized by their racial demographic. The only districts not included are Long Island's three central high school districts; these districts are represented by their elementary/middle school districts. For instructions on how to use the map, see the "How-to Use" section below.

How-to Use the Interactive Map

The white lines on the map represent the school district boundaries. If you click within those boundaries you will see a pop-up that provides data about that school district. The pop-up has data for the 2013-2014 school year and the 2004-2003 school year. Place your mouse on the pop-up and scroll up and down to see all of the data.

ScreenHunter 02 Jun. 02 11.09On the right side of the screen you will see a section with "widgets." Widgets are tools that you can use to filter the data. The widgets are histograms of the data that show its distribution along a continuum. For example, you will see that for the "Percent White" widget, the distribution of the data is skewed to the higher numbers; this is because most school districts on Long Island have a high percent of white students.

In order to use the widgets, simply click on one of the bars on the histogram, or choose multiple bars by clicking and dragging over the selected range. The map will display only the districts in the range that you have selected.

The widgets also work together, so you are able to filter by more than one widget at a time. In the screenshot below you will see that the map is showing districts that are 38-57% white AND 33-56% Asian. Only two school districts—New Hyde Park-Garden City Park UFSD and Jericho UFSD)—meet this criteria.
