Eliminating Barriers to Racial Equity

ERASE Racism Calls for Redoubling the Nation’s Commitment to Address Ongoing Racial Inequities in the Wake of the US Supreme Court’s Rejection of Affirmative Action

Syosset, NY – June 30, 2023 – Laura Harding, President of ERASE Racism, issued the following statement today in the wake of the US Supreme Court’s landmark decision yesterday rejecting affirmative action in admission to America’s colleges and universities:

The US Supreme Court’s decision striking down affirmative action in admission to America’s colleges and universities is a major setback in our nation’s pursuit of inclusivity and equal opportunities in higher education. It dismantles hard-fought civil rights meant to redress the impact of enslavement on Black people. It further entrenches the systemic racism that continues to reinforce inequity and inequality in America.

In the wake of this decision, it is time to double down on our nation’s commitment to remove underlying racial disadvantages and inequalities. Key among them is persistent housing discrimination and inequitable funding of public education. Both play a special role in undermining access to quality education and, therefore, to higher education.

Let the Supreme Court decision mark not simply the end of affirmative action but the beginning of a renewed national commitment to social justice for all Americans.”
